The Role of an Advocate
Having someone alongside you in meetings can make a significant difference, particularly if you find it difficult to raise important issues, express your thoughts, or challenge decisions. An advocate’s purpose is to stand beside you and help to ensure your voice is heard and respected.
How an advocate can support you
An advocate’s involvement can help you to:
Raise the questions or concerns that matter to you
Make sure your key points are addressed and not overlooked
Understand the choices available to you, explained clearly and without judgement
Feel safe and supported emotionally—for example, your advocate can request a break if things become stressful or overwhelming
Ask for any reasonable adjustments which you need to help you in the meeting for example, low lighting, paper print outs.
How an advocate empowers your decision-making
Advocacy is centred around your wishes. An advocate will:
Listen to what you think, feel, and want
Talk through your options and rights in a way that helps you reflect, without pressuring you toward a particular choice
Provide objective information so you can make decisions confidently
Help you get in touch with the right people or organisations—or contact them on your behalf if needed
